The National Dawn Walk for Cancer is a new nationwide initiative which seeks to honour all of those who battle or who have battled cancer on a day to day basis, by means of a dawn challenge on Mount Leinster. It goes without saying that there are few houses in Ireland fortunate enough to have gone unvisited by cancer's lingering spectre. While it is beyond the power of any one man or woman to banish this shade forever, together as a national community, we can bring to the fore, the memory of all those who have suffered from this disease and raise much needed funds and awareness that may ultimately contribute to its eradication.
The walk has a unique significance. Just as Donal Walsh referred to his struggle with cancer as 'a mountain', it is crucial that we remember just what this climb is intended to symbolise: in scaling the face of Mount Leinster, we are invited to empathise with the pain experienced by cancer-sufferers on a daily basis, as they grapple with their own personal mountains.
The walk takes place on the 22nd of August at 5.45am and will take participants on a 10km journey over Mount Leinster, from The Nine Stones to the picturesque village of Myshall, Co Carlow.
You can now register online at our website– www.nationaldawnwalkforcancer.com. Places are limited so book early to avoid disappointment. The cost to participate is €10 for adults and €5 for children.
On the morning of the walk we will be gathering at the Presentation De La Salle College, Bagenalstown from 4am onwards with all buses due to depart at 5.15am in order to ensure that participants reach the mountain before the break of dawn. The walk will end at about 8am in Myshall where tea, coffee and refreshments will be served. At this point, a special ceremony will be held whereby the Remembrance Balloons will be released to soar upwards on the breeze in the direction of Mount Leinster. Buses will then be waiting to return the participants to the Presentation De La Salle College.
In the months leading up to the walk, participants and the public will be invited to purchase Remembrance Balloons. The balloons will be on sale in shopping centres across the south east on dates which will be announced on our social media and website and from the organizing team. Each pack contains an intention sheet, where participants will be invited to write a message for their loved-ones who suffer or have suffered from cancer. On the evening of August 21st, these messages will be incinerated and blessed by Bishop Denis Nulty, the Bishop of Kildare and Leighlin. The ashes will then be divided and placed inside of the balloons.
